A Word on Class Attendance:

Before I talk about the class schedule, let me say a few words about class attendance. Generally, your class participation is considered as part of your final grade (see syllabus). If you are taking this class as a distance Education student or if you are a local student who is temporarily out of town or otherwise unable to attend in person, you can attend the class remotely through video conferencing means. Instructions for how to attend remotely can be found here.

Class Meeting Times:

Classes meet on Tuesdays from 2-4pm and Thursdays from 2-5pm. All times are in AKST (UTC-9).

Lecture Schedule:

This course is broken up into four main modules that will walk you through the principles, main processing techniques, and most prominent applications of microwave remote sensing:

• Module “The Basics” will introduce you to the main properties of microwave signals and their interaction with media of different properties.
• In Module “Imaging Radar Systems” I will show you how two-dimensional images can be formed from the observations of microwave systems. You will get the chance to acquire your own radar image using a ground-based radar imaging system.
• In the next module, you will be exposed to “Advanced Radar Processing” techniques such as Polarimetric SAR and Interferometric SAR. You will learn about their concepts, processing steps, and main applications.
• In the final quarter of the semester, we will look at a range of Applications of microwave remote sensing. During this phase of the semester, you will also have time to work on your class project.
