A shape from shading algorithm has been chosen. It is SIRFS (1.5). It is a photogrammetry program meant for everyday objects available for free at jonbarron.info. This program is trained for everyday objects and will require retraining to be used for terrain extraction. The figures below make it readily apparent that significant errors are present.
